This event was started in 2011 to raise awareness and funds for the Canadian Diabetes Association. We wanted to offer an affordable run and involve Barrhaven as it is our community and home. We have since opened it up to all runners by adding it to the Running Room website. All proceeds from Running Scared are given to the Canadian Diabetes Association, but more importantly the money donated stays locally to help people in our own communities.
Since 2011, the run has become a big success. Last year we had over 500 runners of all ages, as we welcomed schools and sports teams to also take part. The run included metals for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place for each run category, prizes for top 3 costumes, a great runner’s kit and after run snacks. We were fortunate to have some significant partners/sponsorship which included Capital Funeral Home & Cemetery, Loblaws Market Barrhaven, The Running Room, Lululemon, Aura Atelier, Marketplace Chiropractic, Kelly Manthorpe Heaphy, Barrhaven Optometric, Bertina Cleaning, Boston Pizza, La Piazza, and many other contributors.
On October 23, 2016, Running Scared 2016 will begin and end at Capital Funeral home and Cemetery. Mountain Goat Timing will be handling the bibs, chips, and other state of the art services to us this year. They will be producing a web page for the race that will be promoted to all major running organizations and suppliers. This means a lot more marketing and recognition for all businesses involved in the event. Running Scared is once again registered on The Running Room website (www.runningroom.ca), and also at www.JennaandCo.com. The Jenna & Co. Connection, which is a colour printed newsletter, will go out to approximately 700 people in Barrhaven and surrounding areas of Ottawa. We have also acquired over the past year a social media specialist and will be posting on Facebook, twitter, and Google plus. Once again The Canadian Diabetes Association will advertise on their website. We will be using large Billboards, community newspapers, and bulletin boards. The race fee will include: timing chip, runners bib, t-shirts, kit, drinks (including 3 water stations), and snacks after the race. The run is Halloween based and costumes are definitely encouraged.
We look forward to seeing you on October 23, 2016.
